The 2024 Heather “Heddy” Nichols Memorial Scholarship – The Spirit of the Phoenix

Description:

Join the Mystical Order of the Phoenix Mardi Gras Krewe in remembering our friend and mentor, Heather Nichols, who was a founding member, board chairman, and lover of all things Mardi Gras and MOOTP.  This one-time monetary award is open to young women in the Greater New Orleans area who are currently enrolled in an art program or school endorsed art course. Art programs may be defined as a program that provides New Orleans area local youth with educational experience in art. (YAMS, YAYA, New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts, NOCCA, etc.)  Students in grades 9 through 12 who are active participants in a school art course or program are invited to submit an application along with artwork specific to our guidelines, to compete for a $1000 scholarship, payable directly to the winner.

Artwork Rules:

1. Each student artist must complete the application and submit an art project in the form of one plastic charger plate/platter, the Mystical Order of the Phoenix signature throw.
2. Charger platters may be found in stores such as thrift shops, Dollar Tree, Walmart, and Amazon to name a few. Applicants are encouraged to upcycle, recycle, and reinvent materials for their projects.
3. Your submission should follow the standard sizing described below.
4. One Round 13” (3” limit for depth), OR one square/rectangular 15” X 10” (3” limit for depth)
5. No glass, ceramic, porcelain, or metal.
6. Profanity and/or inappropriate content will be disqualified.
7. Copyrighted logos, pictures or characters is strictly prohibited.

Application Instructions:

• Complete the application with all required signatures.
• Include a short-typewritten description of your artwork. (See application section “C”).
• Submit a proof of school enrollment form or program enrollment form signed by a member of
•  the leadership team or director of programs.
• All materials must be submitted by November 25, 2024, to:

Selection, Judging and Awarding:

Student artists’ artwork will be displayed for voting by Mystical Order of the Phoenix membership during our Rules of the Ride meeting.

The scholarship presentation will be held on a date in January 2024 TBD, at Martin Insurance Agency Inc., in New Orleans.
